What is CBD and how does it work?

At this point, you've most likely heard of CBD. You've probably seen CBD products popping up everywhere including on the shelves of your local stores. But what exactly is CBD and how does it actually work?

What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is a molecule known as a cannabinoid that is produced in the cannabis plant.

The human body naturally produces its own cannabinoids called Endocannabinoids. When the level of Endocannabinoids is out of balance, that's when we begin to feel such things as anxiety, stress, and depression, and we may experience pain, inflammation, appetite issues, trouble sleeping, and mood disorders, among other issues.

The cannabinoids produced in the cannabis plant, Phytocannabinoids, are so close in structure that they can mimic the body's Endocannabinoids and therefore produce the same beneficial effects. This means you can supplement the body's Endocannabinoid System with external cannabinoids, one of the most well-known being CBD.

While CBD and its long list of incredible therapeutic benefits might give the impression that it's magic, it's definitely not. It's 100% science.

Is CBD safe?

CBD is one of the safest drugs out there with a huge range of medicinal benefits and in most cases absolutely zero negative side effects. It is entirely non-addictive and in fact, is being used to help combat opioid addictions.

Will CBD make me feel high?

CBD doesn't bind with cannabinoid receptors the way THC does so it does not have the same kind of mind-altering effects and won't make you feel "high". In fact, CBD can actually reduce or neutralize the psychoactive effects of THC. This means when taken together, the "high" that comes from THC will be reduced, making it more widely applicable as a treatment drug.

How does CBD work?

CBD works by activating receptors on the surfaces of cells throughout the body. The process is triggered when something puts the body out of balance such as pain, hunger, stress, inflammation, nausea, etc. Once activated, the receptors then send signals through the body telling it to modify the physiological process in question to regain homeostasis or balance within the body. This makes CBD's beneficial properties applicable to a wide range of medical conditions and the associated symptoms.

CBD for Depression & Anxiety

CBD is known to activate serotonin receptors, which lends to its use as a treatment for depression & anxiety. The serotonin receptor is involved in many neurological processes including but not limited to anxiety, depression, mood, appetite, pain perception, nausea, vomiting, addiction, and sleep.

CBD for Inflammation and Pain Relief

It also binds to and influences vanilloid receptors (TRPV1) which modulate pain perception, temperature, and inflammation. This is why CBD is commonly used for chronic pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory for conditions such as arthritis.

Unlike traditional pain meds such as NSAIDs (for example Advil) CBD does not appear to damage the liver and in fact, has anti-inflammatory qualities that may help reduce inflammation caused by the overuse of NSAIDs.

CBD for Osteoporosis

While CBD activates or binds to the previous receptors, scientists believe that CBD actually blocks another receptor known as an Orphan Receptor or GPR55 (G-Protein-Coupled Receptor 55). This receptor is involved in modulating blood pressure and bone density. Excessive GPR55 signaling is associated with osteoporosis.

CBD & Cannabis for Cancer

Activation of the GPR55 receptor is also involved in cancer cell proliferation. In plain English, that's a bad thing. Because of these receptor relationships, CBD and cannabis are currently being studied and tested as anti-cancer treatment options. Research centers around how they interact with these receptors and how they may be used as anti-tumor agents, as well as to treat the pain, inflammation, nausea, decreased appetite, and other debilitating side effects associated with cancer and its standard treatments such as chemo and radiation.

WHAT IS BIOAVAILABILITY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Bioavailability is defined by the Oxford dictionary as:

The proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to have an active effect.

When it comes to CBD, the higher the percentage that you can get into the bloodstream, the better. CBD oils have a lower bioavailability than our Nano CBD Powder and here's why:

Uptake of CBD in the form of an oil tincture occurs mainly in the mouth where it is absorbed through the mouth's mucous membranes. This is why it is suggested to place it under the tongue or in the gums so it has the longest contact before being swallowed.

Once swallowed it must move through the digestive tract where it degrades in quality and quantity due to the stomach acids involved in digestion process. The remaining amount then passes through the liver and is metabolized by liver enzymes before finally being absorbed into the bloodstream. Studies show the maximum bioavailability of CBD oils is approximately 35%, with most ranging between 10-20%.

In contrast, our CBD Powder is water soluble and nano particle sized. The size of the molecule is important as the tinier the molecule, the easier it is for it to enter the bloodstream. In other words, the more bioavailable it becomes. Also, since the body is made up mainly of water, the water soluble formula of our Nano CBD Powder allows for much easier absorption than an oil form and is almost entirely absorbed by the time it reaches the stomach and liver. It also allows it to be mixed easily into food or drinks.

With our 96% bioavailable water soluble Nano CBD Powder, you will get the highest bioavailability possible from any CBD formula on the market. Our CBD powder also contains zero THC, is GMO and pesticide free and is made in the USA.

High potency healing power you can trust.

The Endocannabinoid System

All humans have an Endocannabinoid system (ECS). Discovered only recently in the late 1980s, the ECS is an internal system much like the nervous system, which regulates a large number of the body's daily functions such as pain, appetite, sleep, energy, temperature, stress, mood, etc. For example, if the body is out of balance due to pain from an injury, the Endocannabinoid System will react and attempt to return the body to its regular operation.

This system is found naturally in all animals, including vertebrates and invertebrates. It is comprised of a mix of receptors, endogenous cannabinoids (aka endocannabinoids, or cannabinoids produced internally by the body), and enzymes. Scientists still aren't entirely sure of all the details of how it works, but know that its main purpose is to maintain biochemical and physiological internal balance, also known as the state of homeostasis. The ECS has been shown to be deregulated, or in layman's terms, out of whack, in pretty much every disease known to man.

The body already creates its own cannabinoids called Endocannabinoids, natural equivalents of the Phytocannabinoids such as CBD found in cannabis. Endo(cannabinoid) refers to cannabinoids produced within the body, whereas Phyto(cannabinoid) means derived from plants.

The two known Endocannabinoids that the body produces naturally are called Anandamide and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol.

The Phytocannabinoids found in cannabis are so close in structure to those produced by the body, that they can actually mimic them. They do this by reacting within the body the same way the Endocannabinoids do ― by interacting with, or bonding to, receptors known as Cannabinoid Receptors. This means supplementing the body with Phytocannabinoids such as CBD can have the same effects as though the body were naturally producing more cannabinoids. This can help with a huge range of conditions including chronic pain, inflammation, appetite issues, tremors and seizures, and even cancer and its associated symptoms.

The two cannabinoid receptors that have been identified in the body are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in highly concentrated numbers in the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system as well as other organs and elsewhere throughout the body. CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune system, gastrointestinal system, and peripheral nervous system.

The Endocannabinoids are synthesized where and when needed by the body's enzymes. The cannabinoids then activate or bind to the cannabinoid receptors on the surface of cells throughout the body which then send signals to modulate whichever process is out of balance. Once the cannabinoids have done their job, enzymes are then produced by the body to break down the cannabinoids.

Expect to hear more about the Endocannabinoid System and its effect on the body as the science and research catch up with the importance of this incredible internal system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBD Safe?

CBD itself is considered extremely safe. According to a report from the World Health Organization, "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

Most possible side effects of CBD are mild and may include dry mouth, fatigue, and changes in mood and appetite.

The largest factor to consider when it comes to taking CBD is its interaction with other prescription drugs you may be taking. It can compete with certain drugs for the enzymes that break down drugs in the liver, causing an increase or decrease in the levels of the prescription drug entering the bloodstream. This is often known as  the "Grapefruit Effect". If you take a prescription that states that it should not be taken with grapefruit, it is a fairly safe bet that CBD would have the same effect. You can separate your CBD intake from your prescription intake by a few hours so they are not processed by the liver at the same time, but we recommend checking with your doctor first before combining CBD and any prescription drugs just to be safe.

What can I expect to feel when I take CBD?

The great part about CBD is that the majority of the effects are just "the absence of".

For example, the absence of pain, the absence of inflammation, the absence of anxiety, the absence of nausea, the absence of seizures etc. If you were to take CBD, you would probably not even notice anything at all. But after a short while, if you stopped for a moment and took stock of how you felt, you may notice that you are no longer anxious and feel calm throughout your body, you might realize that your pain has disappeared, your inflammation has decreased, and over time you may notice a decrease in depression or other mood-related issues.

What is CBD Isolate?

CBD Isolate is just CBD. It has been extracted and isolated from the other cannabinoids that are found naturally in the cannabis plant such as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), CBN (Cannabinol), and CBG (Cannabigerol). CBD Isolate has zero THC and will not cause any type of intoxication whatsoever. As an extract, pure CBD is a crystal form which is then ground down into a powder. CBD isolate can come from either the hemp plant or the marijuana plant but comes more often from the hemp plant due to its low THC levels and legal status. CBD isolate is a great choice if you are worried about taking a product containing any amount of THC. Check out our hemp-derived  100% THC-Free Nano CBD Powder.

Is CBD legal?

The laws around CBD are constantly in flux. All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD to various degrees. As our Nano CBD Powder is hemp-derived and 100% THC-Free, it is legal to purchase and consume in all 50 states. This also means it will not show up on a standard company drug test.

How do I take CBD powder?

Most CBDs on the market come in an oil tincture or chewable gummy. Our CBD powder is water-soluble and nano-particle-sized. This allows it to be easily dissolved into any beverage or food prep. Each container of CBD powder comes with a 60ml shaker bottle and 16mg scoop. If you would prefer to take it directly, just fill the included shaker bottle with water and scoop your powder dose into it. Shake it to mix and drink it down for fast-acting relief. It can also be taken sublingually where it is easily absorbed by the mucous membranes of the mouth.

What are the top benefits of our CBD powder?

The advantages of taking our advanced CBD powder are:

  • Extremely high bioavailability due to the nano-sized particles which allow it to enter the bloodstream in much higher quantities than a typical CBD oil or gummy.

  • Fast-acting: starts working in as little as 15-20 minutes after consuming
